WICHITA, Kansas — Joe Asbridge is counting the days to graduation and Big Brother John Speer can’t help but smile.
“I couldn’t be prouder,” said Speer.
Joe was just a second grader when they met missing his front teeth and missing a consistent role model in his life.
“He’s a great emotional rock, and he’s always there for me,” said Asbridge.
There isn’t much that they haven done together in the last ten years.
Trips to the park gave way to the bright lights of the theater and eventually lessons for a young driver.
“And just thought boy there have been some real changes in what we talked about, and we find fun to,” said Speer.
In recent years, it was working together toward Joe’s Eagle Scout which proved to be a special moment for both little and big.
“He was definitely a big part of that. To me it was a no-brainer to give him the dad pin,” said Asbridge
“I think of that as one of my proudest moments for him because he worked so hard for it,” said Speer.
In a couple weeks, they will celebrate another major accomplishment when Joe graduates from Collegiate.
He’s already made plans to attend Wichita State and major in technical theater.
“John always says he’s gotten more out of this than I do, but I have to disagree with him on that one,” said Asbridge.
“It’s just been a fabulous experience. Joe is not a match to me anymore, Joe is part of our family and will be for the rest of my life,” said Speer.
