LEXINGTON, Kentucky (WLEX) — Alyssa Minton’s best friend was her dog, Peanut. Her sidekick for more than five years. When her dad broke the news this afternoon that Peanut wasn’t coming back, she spent most of today crying and confused.

“It’s not like the end of the world or anything, but if feels pretty bad, it feels real bad. He was a family member,” says Alyssa’s Dad, Jonathan Minton.

Peanut went missing on Saturday. Monday, Minton’s girlfriend called animal control to see if anyone found the chihuahua. Then today, a visit from animal control. A worker there euthanized Peanut over the weekend by mistake.

“They should have triple checked their paperwork before they decided to do anything like that!” Minton says.

Animal control says the person who made that mistake has been fired.

Tuesday, a worker delivered Peanut’s ashes to Minton and his daughter, shook both their hands, and apologized on behalf of animal control.

Minton says that helps ease the pain, but he wants to share his story so people can be aware.

“Know that if there animal goes to animal control, something like this could happen,” he says. “There was nothing wrong with him at all, he was a happy dog.

Animal control says Peanut was not wearing a collar and did not have a micro-chip. They an accident like this this has never happened before.
