WICHITA, Kansas — A 37-year-old Valley Center man was killed early Tuesday morning in a crash near Kellogg and I-235.

Officials say a 2001 GMC Sierra, driven by Brian Batters, struck a guardrail off a bridge and traveled 189 feet over the ditch in the air.

Construction crews working in the area say they heard the crash and looked over just as the car went airborne.

“Witnesses told us the truck was moving at an extremely high rate of speed. The damage of the truck was enough to cause the engine and transmission to fly out of the vehicle. That would indicate extreme speed,” said Lt. Joe Schroeder, Wichita Police Department.

The man who was driving the truck was pronounced dead at the scene.

Westbound Kellogg was shut down as crews investigated the accident, but it has since reopened.

A guardrail on Kellogg is being repaired.
