WINFIELD, Kansas — It took a lifetime to collect dozens of rare and unusual guns for Brian Perrigo of Winfield. It took about twenty minutes for thieves to smash into the house and steal the best part of Perrigo’s collection.
“This one was owned by, I believe, my grandfathers grandfather,” says Perrigo. “I am saddened by this. Really I am.”
Perrigo says his collection included everything from rare German pistols to AR15s to a Winchester from the 1800’s. Cops say they have some good leads and very good evidence.
“Oh, it’s not a matter of if they will catch them,” says Perrigo. “It’s a matter of when. There is no way they can unload these guns and not be noticed. It’s a rare collection.”
This week someone drove to Perrigo’s house when he was not home, smashed through the back doorway, and made off with the best part of his collection.
“It’s probably someone who knows me. It’s probably someone who has been in my house,” says Perrigo. “And that is what hurts the most.”
Perigo says it hurts because he tries to help.
“Me and another guy started the River of Life foundation couple of years ago and started working with troubled people,” explains Perrigo. “And you know we’ve had a lot of success with that. And I’ve always tried to believe in the person that society has thrown in the trash or said they are worth nothing. I have always tried to see the good in people.”
Perrigo looks over the decorative rock in his back yard that smashed the glass door to his home. From the glass door, you can see a small house on his property.
“That house? That is for people who need a place,” says Perrigo. “It’s part of the River of Life foundation. Sometimes, if someone is homeless, we let people stay there.”
” So what will really break my heart is if it’s someone that I’ve looked in the face and told them I loved them and invested in their life and that’s what’s going to break my heart. That will be more disturbing than anything they’ve taken from me.”
“But the guns being gone? That’s just stuff. It can be replaced. It’s just stuff.”
