Wichita State drops opener to SIU

CARBONDALE, Illinois – – Southern Illinois scored four unearned runs in the third inning as the Salukis held on to defeat the Wichita State Shockers 5 to 4 Friday.

WSU committed three errors in the inning providing the run production for the home team.

Cale Elam started and pitched the first three frames for the Shockers. Elam was the losing pitcher.

Winner Cody Forsythe had a perfect game in the first five innings until Tanner Kirk broke it up with a single in the sixth.

Southen Illinois led 5 to nothing in the seventh when Garrett Bayliff singled to left. He was Bayliff’s 13th straight game with a hit.

In the eighth, SIU had a 5 to 2 advantage as Casey Gillaspie drove in Erik Harbutz following a single to right field. Micah Green doubled to left field to score Gillaspie cutting the Saluki lead to 5 to 4.

Wichita State and Southern Illinois continue the weekend series Saturday at Abe Martin Field. The game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
