WICHITA, Kansas–Governor Sam Brownback signed a new sweeping anti-abortion bill on Friday. The law states “life begins at conception,” and comes with mixed reactions from Kansans.
“They’ve over stepped their bounds, and they’ve gone too far,” said Vickie Stangl, Wichita NOW president.
“It’s always nice to confirm what science has already already knows. That human life starts at fertilization, so it’s great that they signed it into law and the other aspects as well,” said David Gittrich, Kansans for Life.
The bill’s aspects include banning sex-selection abortions and prohibits abortion providers involvement in public school sex education classes.
“Well I think that’s great, keeping the abortion industry out of schools because all their doing is recruiting business,” explained Gittrich.
“They just assume that this person will be biased and start talking about abortion is a great thing and you must do this. I think they’re worried however that abortion is always an option given to people,” Stangl added.
The new law also blocks tax breaks.
Stangl continued, “It only blocks tax breaks to abortion providers, it doesn’t take tax breaks away from other health care providers so its very discriminatory.”
“The exact language of this bill is court approved such that the state may allocate resources for adoption and child birth and not abortion,” said Kathy Ostrowski, Kansans for Life.
Pro-life advocates are thrilled with the bill, while others are concerned.
“At least we’re now moving forward instead being behind the dam waiting for it to break. The governor broke the dam,” commented Gittrich.
“Women know that its their ultimate fundamental right to seek this kind of service, and they’ll do it whether its legal or not. And I hope we don’t reach that point,” said Stangl.
Many aspects of the new law will go into effect in July, while tax blocks will be implemented in 20-14.
