Wichita State hangs on against Evansville

WICHITA, Kansas – – The Wichita State baseball team got off to a lead and held off the Evansville Purple Aces 5 to 4 Friday night at Eck Stadium.

Shocker pitcher Cale Elam improved to 5-1 this year. Elam gave up four runs and eight hits in 7.2 of work. Elam struck out six.

Garrett Bayliff was the offensive highlight in the contest with a 2-for-3 performance with two runs batted in. Micah Green was 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

Erik Harbutz was 3-for-3 and Tyler Baker went 3-for-4 at the plate.

Baker’s double in the third starting the rally. Bayliff drove Baker in with a single to right. Bayliff later scored on a Casey Gillaspie single.

Green’s infield single plated the final two runs of the frame putting the Shockers ahead 4 to 0.

Evansville scored three times to cut the lead to 5 to 4. Brandon Peterson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his fourth save.

The teams play the second game of the series Saturday afternoon at 2. Game three of the series will take place Sunday at 1.
