WICHITA, Kansas — A family business in Wichita hosted an open house Friday as a way for owners to thank the community.

Mayor Carl Brewer and Bicycle X-Change owner Michael Scanga held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the business’s latest expansion. But instead of using a ribbon, they cut through a bike tire’s inner tube.

Bicycle X-Change, 908 W. Douglas, started in 1973. It now has an extra 7,000 square feet of space, effectively doubling its size.

The owner says that being in the Delano District fits with the type of family business he runs.

“All of the businesses down here are awesome,” said Scanga. “They’re all owned by individuals, so it keeps the neighborhood up-to-date and very clean. It’s a just a great place to come and visit. We just need more people to come down.”

Scanga says the price of gas has actually helped his business with more people riding bikes to save money.
