WICHITA, Kansas — A Wichita runner that was racing on Monday in the Boston Marathon returned to Kansas late Tuesday night.
Jonathon Guering had already finished the race and was back at his hotel room with his wife Betsey when her parents contacted them and asked if they had heard about the explosions.
They decided to wait in the hotel room and watch the news to see what was going on. They quickly grew concerned though as they realized that the first explosion had gone off right by the finish line, where his parents were headed to buy souvenirs.
“Just immediately wondering where Jonny’s folks were and if they were okay,” said Betsey Guering. “Because I knew they were heading to that exact location for souvenirs because that’s where everything was.”
Jonathan says at that point all the cell phone coverage had been shut down, so all they could do was wait.
“I hoped they were okay,” Jonathon remembered. “We weren’t able to get them via cell phone. We tried and tried and tried, and then a knock on the hotel door. They had come up to our room.
Jonathon says, despite the tragic events on Monday, he would have no problem going back to Boston to run the marathon again. He would also still feel safe running in other major races as well.
