DETROIT, Michigan (WDIV) — One minute a woman and her 4-year-old son were shopping for balloons at a west Detroit dollar store. The next minute the woman has her son in her arms and she’s running for her life.
She was carjacked at gunpoint in the middle of the day. The terrifying ordeal was caught on video. It shows the woman and boy leave the store. As soon as she unlocked the car doors two men wearing black hooded sweatshirts emerged from an abandoned building.
“I really couldn’t see their faces. I just saw the gun. That’s all I remember seeing,” said the woman, who is not named in this story for her safety. “He approached the driver’s side and that’s when he jumped in my car, took the money and told me to give him the keys.”
The crooks were getting away with her car, and they almost took off with her young son, too.
“I was panicking, like I didn’t know what to think. I really wasn’t thinking. The only thing I was thinking was getting him out of the car,” she said.
Nothing was going to stop her.
“I didn’t care for the gun at that point, I just wanted to get my son out, so I pulled him out of the car,” she said.
The car she depended on is likely long gone, and that’s OK.
“I didn’t think they would carjack me for that type of car, but I found out today it really doesn’t matter what type of car that you have,” she said. “I really don’t care about (the car), as long as I got myself, my son, that’s all I care about.”
