Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland closed due to scabies outbreak

GOODLAND, Kansas — Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland is closed until next Tuesday due to an outbreak of scabies.

The first case was reported on Tuesday by a student.

The college says more students were examined, and it was found that they had symptoms consistent with scabies.

The Sherman County Health Department is doing more testing and all students, faculty and staff are being checked.

The campus will be closed until Tuesday so the itch mites that cause the ailment, which need human hosts to survive, will die within two to three days.

The health department is conducting a campus-wide screening of all students, faculty and staff. Anyone who lives in the school’s dorm is recommended for treatment, which consists of using a topical ointment.
