Former Wichita cop sentenced to life behind bars for sex crimes

Joseph McGill

WICHITA, Kansas — A former Wichita cop was sentenced to life behind bars Thursday for sex crimes involving very young children.

During a bench trial in February, Joseph McGill was found guilty of two counts of indecent liberties with a child.

The crimes involved two girls, a 1-year-old in 2011 and a 3-month-old back in 2005.

McGill’s wife testified last June that he had confessed to the crime during a therapy session.

He’ll spend 25 years behind bars before he’s eligible for parole.

McGill was on three years’ probation after pleading guilty in January 2012 in an unrelated case involving inappropriate touching of two women while on duty as a police officer.

He resigned after those charges were filed. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
