Slain W.Va. sheriff to be honored during funeral

DELBARTON, W.Va. (AP) — Slain southern West Virginia Sheriff Eugene Crum will be honored during a funeral service on Sunday.

The 59-year-old Mingo County sheriff was shot to death on Wednesday in a parking lot in downtown Williamson while eating lunch at his regular spot.

Chafin Funeral Home says the service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Mingo Central High School.

Crum had been in office just three months before he was killed. He made good on campaign pledge to help rid the southern coalfields of the illegal prescription drug trade.

Police charged 37-year-old Tennis Melvin Maynard with murder in Crum’s death. The motive for his death is still unclear.

Maynard also is charged with attempted murder. He’s accused of pointing a gun at a deputy following a chase.
