Wichita, Kansas — Shocker fans filled Mid-Continent airport Friday, flying to Atlanta for the big game.
“Let’s go Shockers,” yelled Nicole Kriegiseh and her three sisters. “We’re loving the Shocker hype. It’s everywhere.”
Kriegiseh and her sisters, decked out in Shocker hats for the flight, say WSU spirit runs deep.
“We’re representing the rest of the family,” explains Kriegiseh. “All twelve of us kids went to WSU. Go Shockers!”
While fans fly off to Atlanta, others have decided to stay home and catch the big final four game on TV.
“I’m watching it at home. Nobody around me. It’s not safe to be around me at this level of the game. I could hurt people,” jokes WSU Superfan Kathy Ivy.
Ivy is so much a Wichita State Shocker fan, her official Kansas license plate says “SHOX” and she has her office space flooded with Shocker images and trinkets.
But it’s that licence plate that gets the most attention.
“Oh, I get comments all the time,” says Ivy. “I’ve had people offer to buy the rights to it but I’m not ready to give it up.”
“You know what happens? A lot of people race up behind me and get next to me to see who is driving and then they realize it’s me and say, oh never mind.”
While Ivy says she will be cheering and yelling at the TV come tipoff, she is excited to see so many flying to Atlanta.
“This is great. It’s such a thrill to see Wichita in the national spotlight.”
