WICHITA, Kansas – A familiar face to us, the nation is now getting introduced to WuShock, mascot of the Shockers.
Many are confused by the animated shock of wheat.
The mascot taking the big stage this weekend had humble beginnings.
“You’re looking at uno! Number one! I came up with the idea. I must have something going on!” exclaims Dave Johnson.
As a cheerleader for then Wichita University, Dave realized his school’s need for a mascot when they got to the N.I.T. National Championship in March of 1954.
“Built the first costume for 20 dollars. I put a yellow ping pong ball for a nose and had a battery pack in my hand and it would light up,” explains Dave.
And so he became the first ever Wu Shock.
“Wu Shock first showed up with me at the footballl rallies and games so that’s how wu shock was started.”
Dave says some we shocks have been too big or awkward, but the one that represents the team now is just about perfect.
“There’s only one in the world and that’s right here in Wichita, Kansas.”
Wu Shock is again on the national stage.
Dave says, “To have a person in a costume mixing with the crowd identifying your school with your team and that mascot.”
Telling everyone where the Shockers are from.
“I just can’t wait till where the win the whole thing and then what will happen?” laughs Dave.
As you may have noticed, Dave’s office is covered in Shocker memorabilia.
He says come Saturday, like many Shocker faithful, he and his family will be glued to the TV watching the big game.
