WASHINGTON, DC (CNN) — With a chilly spring in the nation’s capital, Washington’s famous cherry blossoms have been slow to reach their peak. Yet the show has gone on, with restaurants and bars pouring their cherry-inspired best.
Washington’s Cherry Blossoms have been late to their own party, peak bloom pushed back, as temperatures stalled their spring pop.
That hasn’t stopped the rest of the city from seeing pink, especially at restaurants and bars.
Lowes Madison Hotel Director of Restaurants, Robert Yealu, says, “Cherries have a really cool flavor component to them. And even just the different types of cherries that you can get. It really does open up so many different types of flavors, different components to the way we can do things.”
At the hotel; this pink sip is christened “the Sakura,” the traditional name for flowering cherries. Also on the menu, the “Wild Blossom” with peach nectar and Japanese Spice.
The concoctions even stoke friendly competition among the city’s mixologists.
“A lot of people are doing some really cool cocktails. So it does definitely keep us competitive, and it keeps us sharp,” says Yealu.
At the M Street Bar and Grill, there’s an entire menu of cherry drinks, sour and sparkling, including this mix, with cool cucumbers, gin, and a little fizz.
Manager Russell Seuradge says, ” Everyone likes the playfulness that there is with this. It’s also fun watching them being made too, since there are fresh ingredients you get to see the bartender muddle stuff, you get to see him shake the glasses, you get to see him pour the martinis, make the drinks. It’s almost like a show along with it.”
A show that goes on, while D.C. anticipates the main attraction.
