TOPEKA, Kansas (AP) — A Shawnee County District Court judge has awarded the Kansas treasurer’s office the title to $880,000 in unclaimed U.S. savings bonds.
Treasurer Ron Estes will hold the bonds while efforts are made to return them to their legal owners or their heirs.
Estes said Monday that the federal government is holding more than $16 billion in matured savings bonds that are no longer paying interest. He estimated that $151 million of the total is owed to people whose last known address was in Kansas.
Some of the bonds were issued as far back as World War I.
