BOSTON, Massachusetts (NECN) – Boston College officials have threatened disciplinary action against a student group that’s been passing out condoms.
The non-sanctioned campus group called “BC Students For Sexual Health” has been handing out condoms and literature at locations off campus.
Lizzie Jekanowski is the chair of the group, and says she received a letter from the deans threatening disciplinary action if they don’t stop.
“It was a vague, fear-mongering threat, and so we are determined not to be stopped,” she says.
Boston College says handing out condoms violates the Catholic school’s policies and values.
“What we’re saying is work with us, understand we are a Catholic university. We have certain commitments that we’re called to uphold,” says college spokesman Jack Dunn.
“Young women are forced to lie to their doctors, you cannot get condoms anywhere on campus, and there is not the positive and supportive sexual health programming on campus that students need,” Jekanowski argues.
So far, no disciplinary action has been taken, but meetings are being scheduled to discuss the issue.
