BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WVTM) — A provocative church billboard situated behind a Birmingham, Alabama strip club is gaining national attention.
The Rock Church created the jaw-dropping sign that says, ‘Strip for me, Jesus’. The message is a loosely paraphrases scripture from Hebrews 12:1 in the New Living Translation.
“I’m blow away. We didn’t put this sign up with the mindset that the world would notice, but I think its the fulfillment of scripture,” Pastor Mike McClure Jr. said.
McClure says his church is trying to reach those who work or go to strip clubs, in hopes they’ll have a change of heart and turn to Christ.
“We’re going to love Jesus and we’re done sitting back doing nothing. We’re taking the fight to the street,” McClure said.
The billboard is directly behind the Palace Gentlemen’s Club.
Those who’ve seen the sign say they support the church’s stance.
“They say you should go out among the people and talk to them and preach to them. So, I figure that’s what they’re doing. So it’s a good thing,” said Carl Hardy, sign supporter.
“It should grab attention. What’s wrong with it? I mean you know, its ministry,” Thomas Thornton said.
Pastor McClure said the sign was put up around 8 a.m. Monday, and by noon, he’d heard a lot of feedback about the sign from some television networks and outside the country.
The church has signed a contract to keep the sign up for six to nine months and they plan to extend that time period.
